DESCRIPTION:The objective of this course is to assist Member States and Co
-operating States in advanced training on the operational aspects of the E
CMWF forecasting system. The aim of the course is to increase participants
’ ability to examine and assess ECMWF output products. It is directed to
wards staff who are (or will be) using ECMWF products either directly as f
orecasting staff or in research and development work\, and to trainers and
training champions. The course aims to help users get maximum benefit fro
m the Centre's products.\n\nLectures on aspects of the ECMWF forecasting s
ystem will be complemented with practical sessions where participants will
use ECMWF forecasts in real case situations. Participants will have the o
pportunity to familiarise themselves with recently developed web applicati
ons for data visualisation.\n\nThe ensemble forecast (ENS) will be present
ed and the range of available products will be introduced. A large part of
the course will be devoted to the interpretation of these products and to
the evaluation of their quality. Potential benefits of the probabilistic
formulation of the forecast for medium-range to seasonal-range application
s will also be demonstrated.\n\nThe first course of the year is aimed at t
rainers and training champions. There will be a number of activities (for
example lectures\, practical\, games) to help trainers to design learning
experiences that enhance the understanding of ensemble forecasts and the u
se of ECMWF products.\n\nWe will ask participants to complete pre-course a
ctivities or learning tasks which will take up to a maximum of one day of
self-study. Completing pre-course activities helps to ensure that particip
ants are prepared to learn and apply the new content in the course. It als
o provides information that trainers need to make the course more relevant
to students' experience and working environment. These tasks include comp
leting two eLearning modules (1 hour) and contributing to a forum discussi
on.\n\nCourse dates\n\n27-30 January 2020 for trainers and training champi
ons (course code: OP-I)\n\n5-8 October 2020 (course code: OP-II)\n\nRequir
ements\n\nParticipants should have a good meteorological background and pr
actical experience in weather forecasting.\n\nAll the lectures and practic
al activities will be in English.\n\nhttps://events.ecmwf.int/event/152/
