DESCRIPTION:\nDue to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis this training cours
e was held virtually.\n\nThis five-day module will consider the challenge
of making predictions from days to seasons ahead. \n\nThe predictability
of the atmosphere in the medium and extended range will be considered\, in
cluding different aspects of the Earth system which give rise to predictab
ility on longer time scales. Elements of a probabilistic forecast system a
s well as its calibration and verification will be presented.\n\nThe cours
e is a combination of lectures\, hands-on practicals and group discussion
sessions and will include some elements of pre-course study.\n\nPlease not
e that this course does not cover methodologies for downscaling/post-proce
ssing\, probabilistic products or discuss decadal prediction.\n\nMain topi
 cs:\n\n\n	Theoretical ideas - chaos\, predictability limits\n	Ensemble met
hods - taking account of uncertainty in initial conditions and in the mode
 l\n	Predictability in the extended range - ocean\, sea-ice\, stratosphere\
 , land\n	Probabilistic forecast initialisation\, modelling\, evaluation an
 d verification\n	ECMWF medium-range\, monthly and seasonal systems.\n\n\nR
equirements\n\nParticipants should have a good meteorological and mathemat
ical background\, and are expected to be familiar with the contents of sta
ndard meteorological and mathematical textbooks.\n\nIntroductory material
not covered by the course can be found in our lecture note series.\n\nSome
practical experience in numerical weather prediction is an advantage.\n\n
All lectures will be given in English.\n\n\nhttps://events.ecmwf.int/event
