DESCRIPTION:This five-day course is a combination of lectures\, hands-on p
racticals using the Single Column Model\, and group problem classes. Duri
ng the course each parametrized process is introduced and then discusses t
heory\, modelling and verification over several sessions. Please make sure
to consult the confirmed timetable on the left-hand side menu for timings
of classes.Processes consideredGeneral aspects of parametrization and thei
r relation to systematic forecast errorsRadiation in numerical weather pre
dictionThe parametrization of moist processes (convection and clouds)The p
lanetary boundary layerLand surface processesParametrization of subgrid-sc
ale orographic effectsThe representation of physical processes in data ass
imilationPre-course studyParticipants will be expected to take up to 4 onl
ine modules before taking the course. This will provide introductory infor
mation on parametrization\, convection and single column modelling that wi
ll be used in the practical sessions. It is anticipated that this study wil
l take around 3 hours depending on levels of prior knowledge.RequirementsP
articipants should have a good meteorological and mathematical background\
, and are expected to be familiar with the contents of standard meteorolog
ical and mathematical textbooks.Introductory material not covered by the c
ourse can be found in our lecture note series. Some practical experience in
numerical weather prediction is an advantage. All lectures will be given i
 n English.\n\nhttps://events.ecmwf.int/event/332/
