DESCRIPTION:HD photoDescriptionDiagnostics are used throughout weather for
ecasting. They can identify problems\, aid model development\, and highlig
ht successes. Fundamental goals for ECMWF and others include the improveme
nt of ensemble systems and their underlying Earth system models (ESM). Thi
s workshop discussed how novel diagnostics can help us achieve these goals
in physics-driven and data-driven systems. Themes include:Diagnostics of
predictability – key initial condition and model uncertainties\, pathway
 s of error growthProcess-oriented diagnostics – identifying issues\, dig
ging deeper\, ESM interactions\, learning from km-scale forecastsData assi
milation and ML as diagnostic tools – flow-dependent bias and uncertaint
y growth\, explainable AICommunity diagnostic packages and data archives
 – the benefits of comparison and communicationThe use of examples of app
lications to weather phenomena (tropical waves and cyclones\, extratropica
l storm-tracks and blocking\, for example) helped make the workshop access
ible to a wide-range of participants. Highlighting diagnostic success stor
ies (where diagnostics have made a difference) was valuable.FormatThe work
shop took place at ECMWF’s Headquarters in Reading on 9-12 September 202
4\, and consisted of in-person talks and poster presentations. Talks were
 live streamed. \n\nhttps://events.ecmwf.int/event/383/
