DESCRIPTION:\nAdvancing the assimilation of Earth system observations with
new methodology and Machine Learning\nData Assimilation continues to unde
rpin all operational weather forecasting\, initialising physics-based mode
ls as well as initialising and training data-driven models. The 2026 Annua
l Seminar will look at how the deployment of Machine Learning (ML) technol
ogy and innovative methodology is changing the way we assimilate observati
ons for numerical weather prediction\, atmospheric composition and climate
reanalysis. Presentations will explore how highly efficient and accurate
ML emulation is allowing a greater volume and variety of observations to b
e assimilated and an improved characterisation of uncertainty. Learning te
chniques which make better use of measurements with particularly challengi
ng geophysical relationships will be demonstrated and how these can be use
d to improve our understanding of more complex physical processes. Finally
\, the seminar will look at innovative so-called end-to-end ML approaches
which learn the entire assimilation process in a single step\, latent spac
e Data Assimilation and the production of forecasts directly from observat
ions.\nAttendance\nThe seminar is part of ECMWF's educational programme an
d is aimed at early career scientists as well as more established scientis
ts.\nRegistration is now open for on-site attendance. All talks will also
be livestreamed\, with the link shared closer to the event for those who w
ish to watch online.\nIf you would like to attend in-person\, please compl
ete the registration form.\nWhilst there are no registration fees\, please
note that we are unable to provide funding to support attendance. Partici
pants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.\nTim
