The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) is holding a webinar for existing and potential policy users on Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 December 2020.
The meeting is organised in co-operation with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Environment – Clean Air Unit (DG-ENV) and Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space – Earth Observation Unit (DG-DEFIS).
Copernicus is an EU-funded Earth observation programme designed to provide data and information freely and openly through six services to tackle environmental challenges and stimulate innovation and economic growth. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, implemented by the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), provides continuous data and information on air quality, atmospheric composition, and climate change.
In a year dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CAMS webinar substitutes the 4th CAMS Policy User Workshop that was to be held in Brussels in March this year. It is part of the series of workshops for policy users organised by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. This webinar provides insights into the future evolution of the CAMS service and its Policy User products, revises perspectives and lessons learned from the COVID-19 lock-down on the air-quality management situation in Europe and provides a basis for understanding air pollution episodes and related control options.
Workshop outline
The webinar is structured in three interactive sessions:
- Tuesday, 8 December 2020 – 10:00–12:30 - Session 1 – Updates on CAMS and CAMS Policy Products
- Tuesday, 8 December 2020 – 14:00 –16:00 - Session 2 – CAMS perspectives on air quality and COVID-19
- Wednesday 9 December 2020 – 10:00–12:00 - Session 3 – Episode studies and source receptor tools in CAMS
The CAMS policy products are shaped based on feedback from users and policymakers across Europe and consolidated through years of research and development projects. The current products for policymakers describe air quality in Europe and its evolution over the years, identifying air pollution episodes as well as the main drivers and responsible sources for such pollution events. The CAMS policy products are intended to support national environmental users in the process of reporting the cause of exceedances in their countries and in the elaboration of Clean Air plans and programmes under European legislation.
During the workshop
This CAMS policy user webinar provides a unique opportunity to interact with the environmental community and discuss future options for a responsible use of CAMS products in the implementation of Clean Air policies. The growing user experience of CAMS policy products and tools enables an informed discussion on the advantages and limitations of these products at national, regional and urban level. During the 4th CAMS Policy User Webinar, participants will be invited to reflect on priorities for the next phase of Copernicus (2.0) and to provide recommendations to stimulate participatory activities and increase the uptake of CAMS policy products and tools by the policy user community at national level.
