Description
ECMWF’s next scientific model upgrade at the Data Centre in Bologna will be IFS Cycle 50r1.
50r1 brings major changes to the IFS model and data assimilation system, including among many others: new ocean and sea ice models based on NEMO4-SI3, new wave interaction with sea ice and ocean currents, revised wave model bathymetry and modified Stochastically Perturbed Parametrisation (SPP) configuration to reduce 10-metre wind spread in the ensemble.
After making the high-resolution forecast and 'control' member of medium range ensemble forecast (ENS control) identical in IFS Cycle 49r1, with this model upgrade we will stop producing the current ENS control, and the data stream that was formerly called the HRES will be called ENS control instead.
In this webinar, which was broadcasted from the Using ECMWF's Forecasts (UEF2025) meeting in Bologna, Andy Brown, Director of Research, introduced the scientific changes in the IFS Cycle 50r1 and the model performance.
The webinar took place on Monday, 15 September 2025; 15:45 UTC.
Webinar recording is now available.
