This 4-day course aims to enhance participants’ ability to examine, assess, and utilise ECMWF forecast products and to provide advanced training on the operational aspects of the ECMWF forecasting system.
The training is designed primarily for operational forecasting staff and those who are (or will be) using ECMWF forecast products directly in their role.
Main topics
The programme combines lectures covering key components of the ECMWF forecasting system and forecast products with interactive, hands-on sessions. Working in small groups alongside expert trainers, participants will analyse forecast case studies to assess forecast performance at different lead times. Participants will also learn how to effectively use web applications such as ecCharts for data visualisation.
Topics include:
- Discover ECMWF products
- Extreme forecast Index (EFI) and Shift of Tails (SoT)
- ecPoint and Point Rainfall
- Introduction to Verification
- Model Physics
- Machine Learning models for operational forecasting
Requirements
This course is an advanced training for operational weather forecasters in different capacities. Anyone using ECMWF forecast products in research and development work may also benefit.
Participants should have a meteorological background and experience in assessing ... Additionally, some first experience with ECMWF products and knowledge of the ECMWF forecasting systems are a plus.
To ensure participants are well-prepared and able to fully engage with the course content, a set of pre-course activities will be required. These activities, estimated to take up to 8 hours of self-paced study, include completing online e-learning modules, creating a poster showcasing how the participant currently uses ECMWF products in their work, and contributing to online discussion forums. The completion of these tasks will ensure all participants have the knowledge to get the most out of the in-person part of the course and it will also help the trainers to better understand what participants would like to achieve and discuss.
This training is in-person, and all lectures will be given in English.
