Eligibility, Requirements and Code of Conduct

Eligibility

Participants are individuals that form interdisciplinary teams of 2-5 people. Optimally the teams are a mix of various backgrounds. You can register as a team or you can find your team on the day. Participation is fully voluntary and participants are not entitled to any form of compensation.

 

Requirements

The deadline for project submission is 14:00 on Sunday, the 2nd Hackathon day. The projects will be presented to all participants on Sunday from 14:30 onwards.

 

Code of Conduct

All attendees, sponsors, partners, volunteers and staff at our hackathon are required to agree with the following code of conduct.

Be Respectful. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other attendees. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and racist, sexist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate. Photography is encouraged, but ask other participants must be given the chance to decide whether they want to be photographed or not and to opt out if they wish.

Be Thoughtful. Consider and respect other people's opinions and beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their point of view and a diverse range of opinions and perspectives is one thing that allows us to create such innovative solutions at a rapid pace.

Be Open. We welcome attendees from all backgrounds and a hackathon is a great opportunity for learning and meeting new people. Be friendly, welcome and open with your fellow participants. Share your knowledge, expertise and opinions, and embrace those of other people. Consider open source licensing and use of open data and how code you are writing could be reused.

Be Awesome. Do your best and believe in yourself. A hackathon is an incredible experience for people of any ability level; everyone can make a valuable contribution. Not every project will be successful, but ideas that you believe in are worth trying. You could change the world, and if every one project that we build helps someone, saves a life or makes a positive difference, we have succeeded.

 

Terms and Conditions

The ECMWF Hackathon (referred to as "Hackathon") is promoted and hosted by The European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, Shinfield Park, RG2 9AX, Reading, UK. These terms and conditions govern your participation in the ECMWF Hackathon. By submitting your entry and by participating (if you are selected to do so) in the Hackathon, you agree to the following:

  1. To enter: You must be at least 18 years of age or older at the time of entry. Participation is open to anybody and we invite everybody who is interested in the topic. Details on how to enter and logistics of the Hackathon are published on the ECMWF Hackathon websites. Please follow the instructions of ECMWF personnel on site.

  2. Purpose: The purpose of the Hackathon is to encourage Participants to use their knowledge and creativity to generate awesome ideas and change the world.

  3. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): All your original work is and will remain yours. You are free to use the results of the Hackathon that are your original work for any purposes. You will not hold ECMWF responsible for any other participant's or third party's use of the results of your work at Hackathon.

  4. Grant of rights: Your entry and the ideas or concepts provided by you during your participation in the Hackathon may be used and reproduced by ECMWF (and its assignees) in perpetuity for any purpose whatsoever and you hereby grant ECMWF the perpetual sub-licensable right to do so exclusively, royalty-free and without limitation.

  5. ECMWF and other third parties may supply and invite you to use some of its Intellectual Property rights as a Participant in the Hackathon. For the sole purpose of your participation in the Hackathon and for the duration of the Hackathon, you are granted a limited license to use and adapt the Intellectual Property rights of ECMWF made available to you by ECMWF.

  6. Your participation in the Hackathon must only concern your own original work and must not, so far as you are aware, infringe the intellectual property or any other legal or moral rights of any third party, and must not violate applicable law or refer to or portray ECMWF in a disparaging or negative manner. Participants may flag up and define pre-existing IPR if they wish. It is recommended that such pre-existing IPR be identified in a written document before disclosure at the Hackathon.

  7. You acknowledge and agree that a third party may produce similar ideas or concepts during the Hackathon. You also acknowledge and agree that ECMWF, as an international organisation with a strong reputation for innovation, may be working on similar ideas independently whether now or in the future. You agree not to make any claims or demands of any nature against ECMWF in relation to your participation in or contribution to the Hackathon.

  8. Winner selection: A panel of ECMWF (or ECMWF appointed external) judges will select one or several winning ideas for most sustainable solution with best possibility for realization and any other categories as determined by ECMWF. The winning idea will be announced at the Hackathon. The winning idea will also be published on the ECMWF (and other related) websites. The decisions of ECMWF and the judges are final and binding, and may not be appealed.

  9. Prize: ECMWF will announce the type of prizes before the Hackathon. ECMWF reserves the right to substitute a prize (or portion thereof) with one of comparable or greater value, at its sole discretion. Each winner is responsible for the payment of taxes on the prize and for any other costs and expenses associated with the acceptance and use of a prize not specifically described above.

  10. Name and likeness: ECMWF may take photographs and film (audio and video) of the Hackathon to be used as a public record of the Hackathon or for publicity and/or promotional purposes. You can opt out!

  11. As a Participant in the Hackathon you agree to comply with the code of conduct and security regulations provided by ECMWF. ECMWF reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any Participant acting in violation of the code of conduct. You agree that you will not hold ECMWF liable for any loss or damage that may occur to you or your property while at the Hackathon.

  12. In the event of a dispute arising in connection with the Hackathon or these Terms and Conditions, the parties shall attempt to settle their differences in an amicable manner. They shall provide each other with reasons for the dispute within 5 days and meet virtually or physically to resolve the issues within 20 days after the end of the Hackathon. In the event that any dispute cannot be settled within the 20 days, it shall be finally settled under the ICC Rules of Arbitration entered into force on 1 January 2021 by one arbitrator appointed in accordance with such rules sitting in England and chosen by agreement. In accordance with sections 45 and 69 of the Arbitrations Act 1996, the right of appeal by either party to the High Court on a question of law arising in the course of any arbitral proceedings or out of an award made in any arbitral proceedings in hereby agreed to be excluded.
