Webinar: Cycle 48r1 - Data access and format, testing and practicalities

Virtual | 1 June 2023

ECMWF’s first new scientific model upgrade in the new Data Centre in Bologna, IFS Cycle 48r1, is running in near real-time test mode, ahead of its implementation targeted for 27 June 2023.

While all forecast users will benefit from improved model performance, Cycle 48r1 will also bring a number of technical changes:

  • An increase of the medium-range ensemble (ENS) horizontal resolution from 18 to 9 km
  • A major upgrade of the configuration of the extended-range ensemble (ENS extended): Rather than being an extension of the medium-range forecasts starting twice a week at day 15 it will be a separate system, running daily from 00 UTC out to day 46 with 101 members.
  • The introduction of CCSDS compression to reduce data volumes of GRIB2 data

These technical changes will affect many real-time data users, in particular those using ensemble data. For a smooth implementation it is paramount that as many users as possible are testing the new model output in their processing chains ahead of  the implementation.

In this webinar we will give an overview on the technical changes, explain how to get and use test data, and highlight some practical considerations linked to the implementation. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
